Fun Mail and Cathedral Quilt Progress

I finally dragged the girls to the fabric store with me on Saturday afternoon after the littlest was up from nap. We got there in about 20 minutes to find that the store was closed! We had a crazy, wild, wind and rain storm on Thursday night and apparently their power was still out. I hadn't even considered that possibility. I have decided to just work on every other part of the quilt that I can until my husband needs to make a trip to Home Depot which is next to the fabric store. He can pick up the Kona white for me! It should be soon enough since we have started the demolition part of our bathroom project. I decided on the final layout and stitched the blocks of the first two rows together and opened out all the empty windows and stitched them down. Boy, it is so much more time consuming than I thought! I thought I was in the home stretch but I really have a lot more work to do. Now I need to attach row one and row two together and open out those windows that run between them. I love how you can begin to see the circle pattern now though. It's fun to see it come together.

I have noticed how all the real quilters name their quilts. I have yet to name anything but thought that this quilt, due to the time it has taken, deserves a name. I am horrible at naming things though. I think I named our kids ok but term papers in school, exhibits at work, these things I always had a hard time with. Does anyone have a suggestion? I thought I could work on a label too while waiting for my last yard of fabric. If no one has a better idea, it will probably just be "Cathedral Windows"! Last night I received these potholder from Tara in Idaho. She sewed for me for Potholder Pass Round 1. She also made the necklace and earring set for me! Thank you Tara!

  1. hmmm...i like thinking of names but don't have any for your quilt. i will say that all of that white reminds me of snow and the windows look like twinkle lights or like peering into a cheery warm house on a cold night. Or you know, since spring is almost here, it could look like flowers bursting forth from a snow-covered ground. i hope you find a name for it! you have been working so hard on it, it definitely deserves one.

  2. How frustrating about your trip to the fabric store! Can't wait to see the finished quilt - it looks so awesome already! Regarding names, it kind of reminds me of stained glass windows.

  3. You quilt is absolutely gorgeous! But unfortunately, like you, I'm horrible at coming up with names as well. Although, I do like Allison's idea with the twinkle lights!

  4. Bummer about the fabric store, especially knowing what a fiasco it is to get out with little ones! Beauty jewelry and potholder package! I've been thinking about your stunning quilt and love seeing it come together. Since you've carefully fussy cut and chosen all of the window fabrics and spent so much time looking at them, what about something to do with your perspective, like "View from My Window"?

  6. When I'm stuck on a name, and the blocks I'm working with are known by a name, I usually will rework the name of the block (ex: "Cathedral Windows" can also be called "Windows of the Cathdral") and sometimes that inspires a flow of names. Other words pop in, adjectives for either Cathedral or Windows, or perhaps the season this quilt was worked on, or any significant life happenings while you were working on it....I dunno if that helps. =)

  9. Looking at your cathedral windows, I'd say you are a "real" quilter!

I'm terrible at names, too. (The three pets I've adopted have kept the names they came with!) I haven't made many quilts, but I usually name them after the pattern or the fabric. I like what Kristen said about re-working the name of the pattern.
