Gathered Clutch

When I saw the gathered clutch tutorial on the Noodlehead blog, I knew I had to try it. I love gathers! I made this on Mother's Day afternoon, for myself, as a test case. I like how it turned out. I need to buy some plastic zippers that I can stitch through though. I was using a metal zipper that my Grandmother had ripped out of an old garment before throwing it out. I think it would have been more successful in the zipper area if I could have stitched closer to the zipper on the ends. I am definitely planning to make more for gifts. I think I would like it to have more substance though. I was considering adding a scrap of batting in between the layers. Has anyone tried that? Suggestions?

  1. That is so pretty. It's nice when a 'practice project' turns out well enough to like and use!

  2. pretty! I see a lot of bag patterns calling for fusible fleece. I haven't tried it yet though.

  3. looks great! I use fusible fleece for a lot of my projects. On the gathered clutch I made, I interfaced both the outer fabric and the lining, pockets, and divider and it made for a really sturdy clutch.

  5. that's really beautiful Amy. I agree with Vanessa, fusible fleece or even a layer of canvas in between would make it more substantial feeling. You might want to switch up to a size 14 needle though. I think it's a great suggestion. Hope you do make some more! :)

  10. Gorgeous! Amy, you inspire me. I often use fusible fleece with good results and best of all I do not find it to be bulky. I too will have to check out that tutorial.
