Quick Baby Shower Quilt

I have a baby shower to go to next weekend and wanted to make a small baby quilt. The couple is having a surprise and so they are planning on decorating with green. They had been talking about a jungle animal theme so I was searching for jungle animal prints that were heavy on the greens and found Wild Friends. I bought a yard of the animal print and a half yard of the dot and the stripes and thought I could figure out some design to use them. Just recently we heard that the couple was talking about decorating with storybook characters! I was so upset and started to think I should scrap this and wait till the baby was born. I would give a certificate for a quilt at the shower and make it after the baby was born. But the baby is coming in November, right before the holidays when I know I am going to be busy. And I knew I wouldn't have use for this material for any other project. So, with the shower less than a week away now, I decided to just make it and let it go. I like the animal print best in big sections so this is the design I finally settled on. I used straight line quilting on the sections with squares and freemotion rows of "hills" in the animal print, mimicking the details in the background of that material. I am pleased enough with it. And it is done.

  1. This is really cute Amy! I like how you framed the animals. And ugh, it can be so difficult trying to match a theme, but in all reality the quilt will get used so many places other than the actual nursery. I bet the parents will absolutely love it :)

  2. It is fabulous! What a fun print, and you've done a great job showing it off. I'm sure that it will get lots of lovin' in its new home-- even if it doesn't match the theme.

  3. That is freaking adorable....call it a playmat...I really don't think people should even worry about matching anything....matchy, matchy is so boring!;)

I'm sure this will be treasured...my kids (23, 21) would love that fabric!;)

  8. i, too, think it is a very sweet quilt and i like the way the various animals have their moment in the framed squares. i also like the free-motion quilting in the rectangular sections. But probably my favourite part of this quilt is that quirky little striped border between the quilt and the binding. LOVE that! So, 2 thumbs up!

  9. i had a similar experience... i had purchased some of alexander henry's pin up guy fabric to make something for my friend's stagette. at the last minute i found out that it was going to be a jack and jill AND it was just wings at a pub AND there wouldn't be any drinking because she was pregnant! and i mean, what else are you going to use that fabric for??? i felt so awkward giving her the cape that i made for her with her husband to be standing right there beside her, but she loved it and flapped around all night in it!

  10. I think you did the right thing. You were making it with them in mind. Making things after the fact is never as much fun and makes you nervous if you don't get it finished quickly. Besides, quilts get used all over the place, not just in the baby's room.

    It's very, very cute!

  11. Regardless of how they decorate, this quilt is super-cute and I'm sure they'll love it. It will last beyond baby years, too, which is always a bonus! (The storybook theme would be outgrown pretty quickly, especially if it's a boy, while the animals will still be 'cool'.)

  12. This quilt is super cute!
SO glad you didn't scrap the idea! Dont stress if it wont match the room cause they will probably change the room as the child grows anyway. All kids know that quilts make awesome cubbie houses at any age! : )
