Hand Turned Pens

If you found yourself wondering what we filled these bags with, I can tell you now! My husband made hand turned pens for many of the adults on our Christmas list. We chose various woods depending on what we thought people would like.

He had never turned wood before but purchased an old 1980s Craftsman lathe off of Craigslist last winter. For his birthday, I gave him the makings for a mechanical pencil and that was his first attempt at hand turning. He was hooked and decided to try these.

This one was finished after the official photo shoot because the first pen blank broke.

And this one was a surprise made for me. I found it in my stocking!

  2. Incredible. I love wood anything, but these are particularly gorgeous. I have a teeny bit of experience with woodwork, but have never tried a lathe. I can't imagine how you can turn something so narrow. My son took his first high school wood class this fall and made a beautiful bowl. His teacher showed him how to use a copper wire to burn stripes into the outside edge of the bowl to decorate it. Cool! I bet people were over the moon with these incredible gifts Amy...did he make the wooden storage boxes, too? They are equally as gorgeous!

What kind of wood are the blue-ish pens made of?

  10. The collection of pens that you have shared over here is really nice and all the pens are just adorable. I love wood and also love all the attractive things that made from wood. I like to use different different type of pen also.

  11. He did an awesome job!! And you picked out some beautiful materials for him! :D My son and his friend had one. It was set up here for a while and everyday after work, he would come home and "work some wood"!! He enjoyed creating something so much...he was so sad when he and his friend "broke up" and the friend took the lathe :(

  19. It is a nice collection of pens and I would suggest it is a good idea if we present someone a pen like this.
