Waste Not, Want Not

I have to admit that I often find the cutting and piecing process of quilting tedious and dare I say, boring? I like to keep my mind busy while doing those things. This is part of the reason why I often start a quilt with a picture in my head rather than a sketch or full blown plan. As I work on the first step, my mind it busy puzzling out my next move. I also try to figure out the most efficient way to do something, etc. Perhaps I am sounding really geeky here, but, oh well!

I was just working on my current quilt backing. I challenged myself to use as many of the scraps from the Central Park layer cake as I could. I made a large square composed of 144 little 1 1/2" squares. I told my husband that this brings new meaning to a pieced backing. He said I was obsessive. Then I told him that I was trying my best to use all my scraps and he changed his tune and was impressed. Hmph. Husbands.

  2. What a cute little mosaic! I am sure that took some patience! I am a big fan of pieced backs, for "thrifty" reasons or not, and sometimes though they are a bit more simple than the front, I often like them better!

  6. That is beautiful! I have to say that I am intimidated by the tedious nature of 1 1/2 inch blocks but I do love the end result.

  10. Sometimes "obsessive" and "creative" are only a hairsbreadth away from each other...but the one is a worthy price to pay for the other!

I haven't done a pieced back yet...I always chicken out and go traditional. I love your mosaic, though -- it's lovely. Maybe if I keep seeing such beauty I'll get up enough nerve to do it myself!

  12. Now that is the ultimate of scrappy -- and beautiful to boot. Wish I had the patience to work with such teeny tiny bits of fabric. And it's on the back? Good for you.

  15. Well done on the scrap useage! I aspire to make a whole quilt front out of 1.5" scraps, but meanwhile I'll settle for admiring your beautifully pieced back :)

  16. I have been wondering what to do with my charm packs (plural) of Central Park fabric.
All these little squares look so fabulous together!
I never would have thought of it but now I think I have to make a quilt like this.
    Great work!
