Reversible Bucket Hat

Here is my last project from "Oliver + S Little Things to Sew." My son requested a reversible bucket hat. It took a fair amount of work so I was relieved when it fit! He is 8 and the size 6-8 years, large, fit him perfectly. I didn't have any boy fabric so my friend Amy pulled through and hand delivered some fabric from her shop...gotta love that. I used Michael Miller's tiny gingham in lime and "Honk Honk" in brown.

I love that it is truly reversible. The hat wasn't difficult to make but it takes some time to clip the seam allowances and pin the hat pieces.

This part made my eyes crazy. When stitching the 1/4" top stitching around the brim, I had super tiny lime gingham spinning while I was focusing on trying to achieve perfect lines! It was so hard to look at!
I am on a kids' sewing kick at the moment. I am partly through two new dresses for the girls but then I am back to quilting. I have a couple of project planned but not yet started!

  2. I love the bucket hat! I've already made two, and have a third planned for my freakishly big-headed toddler (important lesson in taking measurements before sewing...). I can't wait to tackle a couple of other projects from that book.

  4. Perfect fabric for this hat. I have one to make my granddaughter that I need to get done. I think Amy's fabric arrives about as fast as her hand delivering it to you does!!.hah.ah.ah.a.a.

  9. Awesome. Great fabric choices! I attempted to make myself Betz White's reversible bucket hat last year and it was an epic fail as I had to increase the size of it for my super-noggin and in the end it was too small in circumference and about an inch higher in the crown which looked ridiculous. I need to go back to the drawing board on that one b/c I really need a good hat this summer!

  10. Very cute! I got some of the lime green gingham from Amy to make pants for Baby M. I hope that my eyes don't go too crazy sewing it!
