Last Minute Tutus

When I posted pictures of Penelope and the library book bag that I made her for Christmas, Carol said that Penny looked like a girl who would like a tutu and that I should make her one for Christmas. I thought that my Christmas sewing was done and I was fully into Christmas baking. Today we are decorating sugar cookies and recently the kids helped create this gingerbread train station.

But once Carol mentioned the tutus, I felt compelled to make them because Penny IS the kinda girl who would love a tutu. And her older sister outgrew her tutu so she should have one too.
They really are easy. I just made an elastic waistband and knotted on strips of tulle. I didn't realize that you could buy tulle already in strips in the bridal section of JoAnns. I didn't fancy the idea of cutting strips of tulle. The strips made it a breeze. Thanks Carol...but no more ideas now because I need to be done Christmas sewing.

  5. Hi Amy-Any tips on how to sew tutus? I am not an expereinced sewer so this is why my question is so basic. I'd like to make one for my daughter too and haven't been able to find one in the right color. Not to mention that they are very pricy at the stores! Thank you.

  6. Laurel, I am not sure that tutus can even be called a sewing project! They are really easy. Just measure your girl's waist and cut a piece of 1/2" wide elastic to size. Overlap the ends of the elastic and stitch to secure (this is the only sewing). Then measure your model again from her waist to her knee or wherever you want her tutu to come to. Double that measurement and cut strips of tulle to that length. You can buy rolls of tulle strips in the bridal section of JoAnns (buy 2). I double knotted my strips all the way around the tutu so the knot is in the center of the strip. Continue till the elastic is covered. I alternated strips of white then pink on one tutu and blue then lavender on the other. You could also use all one color. Then I tied a satin ribbon to the waistband. The whole project comes to under $10.
