Thank you for all the nice compliments on my Courthouse Steps quilt top. I pieced together a backing using Kona mustard and an Echo print. I spent an evening pin basting ever so carefully. Then when I started to quilt, the top started shifting terribly even though the pins were fairly closely spaced. I had to unpick 3 rows of quilting stitches and remove all the pins. Then I decided to try spray basting. It seems to be working. Thank goodness! I think that all the shifting was caused by the number of linens and crossweaves that I used in the top.
I consulted with Rita, the queen of straight line quilting, for quilting ideas. She had a great suggestion. I hope I can show you soon! Now that my basting issues appear to be resolved, it's moving along pretty quickly.
I have also managed to identify all the fabrics I used with the exception of just two, thanks in part toTammy. I will share that list as well.
Can't wait for you to share, I stink at basting and just tried straight line and lets just say, I need a little help!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see what you decided on. Welcome to the world of spray basting I love it!
ReplyDeleteI love spray basting, never use anything else. I am looking forward to seeing what Rita recommended
ReplyDeleteHow frustrating! Glad you are on your way now, I am sure it will be gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI am a big fan of spray basting. Can't wait to see how you quilt it!
ReplyDeleteThree cheers for spray basting! :-) I found that made shifting/puckering issues MUCH better. Obviously a lot of it is the composition and construction of the top, but the spray took it that final step for me. It's not like puckering is nonexistent, but it's gotten to the point of occasional and acceptable. Good enough!
ReplyDeleteYay for spray basting! Looking forward to seeing the end results :o)
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you are making progress. I'm anxious to hear Rita's suggestion. This is mainly what keeps me from quilting my own quilts--the whole basting process--I HATE pin basting anything larger than a wall hanging. Any advice would be very welcome!
ReplyDeleteOh, I like that shot of your sewing machine at work. I think your light looks nice and bright too. I'm with ya on the spray basting, I think it's the way to go. Hurry, hurry Amy - I can't wait to see it finished!!
ReplyDeleteOh...your courthouse steps are fantastic!!
ReplyDeleteI have tried really, really hard to be all "oh those nasty fumes spray basting isn't for me blah blah" but honestly, it is the SHIZZ. So fast, so grabby of the fabric, so easy.
ReplyDeleteI haven't checked in here for some time as I thought it was getting boring, but the last several posts are good quality so I guess I'll add you back to my everyday bloglist. You deserve it friend :)
