Why no Seam Rippers?

If you have been wondering why my husband hasn't gotten any new seam rippers into my shop lately...this is why. He has been spending every spare second on his Pinewood Derby car. No, he isn't a cub scout...my nine year old is. He is the den leader for my son's troop and likes to make a car each year as well. He printed many an image of police cars from the internet to sketch the profile of the car, the front, the back, the top. Everyday when he'd get home from his commute into Cambridge, he would report on the coloring schemes of various police cars he saw in his travels. He made water slide decals for the sides of the car and for the top, using the den number. He then dissected light up balls from the dollar bins at Target in order to use their blue and red LEDs for the lights on top of the car and in the front. He welding them all together and there is a little mercury tube in there and when it is flat, at the bottom of the ramp, the lights should go on. Let's hope it works as he plans or he will be so disappointed. He expects his car to be slow so it should have its lights on as it trails the faster cars in the race. I am off to see the race now and hoping to sell some of our excess girl scout cookies from our Daisy troop while I am at it!

  1. That is so awesome! My son made his car this year to look like a pyramid, and he placed in the top 3 for every race! A few years ago I made my own car for the parent's race. I shaped it like a minivan and decoupaged flowery fabric all over it and filled it with nails so it would be super heavy. The only rules for the parent's race was that the car had to fit the track and not damage it! So I figured the heavier it was, the faster it would go down the track. Bad planning...didn't even place, but I sure had fun with it, and it looked great!

Be sure to share the race results here...with a video if possible! That would be fun to see!

  4. awww how cool. My hubby used to do the same thing with my children. We had Awana car races and every year my children built a car. They never did much for speed, but it was fun to go for design.

  5. My husband and I had to laugh with your post. Brought back a lot of memories of our pine wood days...Our son is 30 now. My husband fixed and stored the track back in the day. Thanks for your post today. What a great car!

  8. I was just thinking about your seam rippers last night. Why the darn little blue ones from the store can't stay together or stay sharp are beyond me. Looking forward to a new set!

  11. I lived your world for many years. I still to this day have no idea if the kids got nearly as much out of Pinewood Derby as dad did!! hahahaha

My hubs who isn't very outgoing ended up being their scout leader all the years they were in it, and they both made Eagle. The memories go on and on, and they both delight in sharing stories with their dad over it all.

It'a a great program and wonderful for the boys to experience. Treasure those goofy cars, it's the building block to some great adults! :-)
