<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I can't believe that I have finished my garden series! Thank goodness I chose a theme that I love so much because this set of 16 patterns was a lot of work. I am happy to share my final block today, a dragonfly. If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I love daylilies and have a lot of them in my garden. The dragonflies love to land on the stalks once the flowers are spent and that was my inspiration for this block.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtZp5YqLyomAHFGb0JQmgO0_DHIyZfgW3cj4tnafpOv69QDao9yPcSUN_fatY6dUPHHPLRBYYt1evDFW9r6tzDSR8CcBR6ZUx5f0BLUj_mhTOczd7HyjJfCGHNGaPak8YGg_zEExfeivg/s1600/IMGP6616a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtZp5YqLyomAHFGb0JQmgO0_DHIyZfgW3cj4tnafpOv69QDao9yPcSUN_fatY6dUPHHPLRBYYt1evDFW9r6tzDSR8CcBR6ZUx5f0BLUj_mhTOczd7HyjJfCGHNGaPak8YGg_zEExfeivg/s400/IMGP6616a.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I designed this block to be oriented as shown on the pattern cover but the block can be turned in any direction and works equally well. I actually may use mine as shown above in my final quilt layout. I am still deciding on the placement of the blocks though.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD9NpOLCG1meMEhHtuWXwoeVY4KmHY5Gz-bbUayVSq53tLwnpaII1y_9HLoswZ4ncZtxXNYZ29ay2hu5dd_gG62cLJN3cjnS9tGco58accD5092lVVE3JRFvQuwFZfvufaY2M7MsZUGcU/s1600/dragonfly+pillow.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD9NpOLCG1meMEhHtuWXwoeVY4KmHY5Gz-bbUayVSq53tLwnpaII1y_9HLoswZ4ncZtxXNYZ29ay2hu5dd_gG62cLJN3cjnS9tGco58accD5092lVVE3JRFvQuwFZfvufaY2M7MsZUGcU/s400/dragonfly+pillow.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you were to make 4 of these blocks and turn them to make a circle, you could make a really neat 20" finished pillow cover!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can find the finished pattern in my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/156668105/dragonfly-paper-pieced-pattern?ref=shop_home_active">Etsy shop</a> or <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/user/673364/pattern-store?_ct=fhevybu-ikrdql-fqjjuhdijehu">Crafty shop</a>.</div>

<br />
I swear I have never been involved in as many collaborative charity activities as I have been the past few months. But that is a good thing! This time, <a href="http://sarahwatsonillustration.com/">Sarah Watson</a> offered our guild, the <a href="http://seacoastmodernquiltguild.blogspot.com/">Seacoast Modern Quilt Guild</a>, some of her Indian Summer fabric line. Her wish was that we use the fabric for charity. We decided to divide the fabric to make four collaborative baby quilts. Peg from <a href="http://www.sewfreshfabrics.com/">Sew Fresh</a>, donated the coordinating solids. Volunteers got together geographically in groups of three or four to make the quilts.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNIq31D5CgaVK44t2a2ZzDxYjxcRdvjYeeqlMekIzUVK5jIghx13y9XqK1rb7h_e9xXwKQnZMsBzAQZ06RjqayaF_Y1UbJs2EIzXWem7IN7tV03ciQNmJbxb1NxGb_d9S2nG2aEaiCs68/s1600/IMGP6591a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="263" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNIq31D5CgaVK44t2a2ZzDxYjxcRdvjYeeqlMekIzUVK5jIghx13y9XqK1rb7h_e9xXwKQnZMsBzAQZ06RjqayaF_Y1UbJs2EIzXWem7IN7tV03ciQNmJbxb1NxGb_d9S2nG2aEaiCs68/s400/IMGP6591a.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I was lucky to work with <a href="http://littleandlots.wordpress.com/">Laura</a> who pieced the center medallion of the quilt with the stars, as well as two of Anna Maria Horner's feathers. I like the way Laura latched onto the Indian Summer theme with the night sky and feather motifs.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaUuydPp0Qx0GBSF8fLCDDliPFYdjg50tZJaD2oZDUz1TD4d-DtobtJrBZXRCI45nhciaUSSEDzwJxXcCi5leqXT3QE4qLP_l9u-eXOUaY3cNDNh7PbEwKFaahJ0cfAQbw90GAEOzV_Ko/s1600/IMGP6590a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="263" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaUuydPp0Qx0GBSF8fLCDDliPFYdjg50tZJaD2oZDUz1TD4d-DtobtJrBZXRCI45nhciaUSSEDzwJxXcCi5leqXT3QE4qLP_l9u-eXOUaY3cNDNh7PbEwKFaahJ0cfAQbw90GAEOzV_Ko/s400/IMGP6590a.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The quilt then passed to my mother who added the forest at the top of the quilt. I love the way the bear and owl heads are peeking through the trees! She also added the river at the bottom.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHY74-hFeeqDa5N6XFAK6VtfQGilDb92CmQbVr5qKle99_ZdSGehFidFFpyBenlB7swnBHuY-w_7kfJKT5hbV_6RL8AVfHWUsm9sAonA3aT_vFkkImrh76ZRL71YDRQ9tSFNnltTjwjik/s1600/IMGP6597a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHY74-hFeeqDa5N6XFAK6VtfQGilDb92CmQbVr5qKle99_ZdSGehFidFFpyBenlB7swnBHuY-w_7kfJKT5hbV_6RL8AVfHWUsm9sAonA3aT_vFkkImrh76ZRL71YDRQ9tSFNnltTjwjik/s640/IMGP6597a.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Additionally, my mother pieced the back of the quilt making use of nearly every scrap that we had left! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I got the easy job! I just basted, quilted and bound the quilt. I decided to keep the quilting light since the quilt top has a lot going on in it. I also wanted to keep the quilt soft for a baby and heavy quilting tends to make a quilt a little stiff. I started at the bottom of the quilt and used the "river" to start my wavy free motion quilting.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I found a quarter yard cut of a DS Quilts print in my stash that worked well for the binding.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am looking forward to seeing the other three baby quilts completed by our August SMQG meeting. We are hoping to donate them to families with infants in Moore, OK.</div>

<br />
I just completed my 15th paper pieced garden block. That means that I have just one more to go in order to reach the goal I set for myself of 16 original designs. Then I can start sewing the quilt top!!! Exciting!<br />
<br />
This block is a butterfly resting on a coneflower. For me, this image sums up the summer garden in a quick snap shot. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The pattern is available in my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/156338317/coneflower-with-butterfly-paper-pieced?ref=shop_home_active">Etsy shop</a> and my <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/user/673364/pattern-store">Craftsy shop</a> along with the others in my series.</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made the butterfly wings very simple so that they wouldn't overwhelm people with intricate piecing. As a result, I think fabric choice is critical. You need to chose something that has a butterfly wing like pattern. In my case, I was trying to coordinate with my other blocks and that contributed to my decision too. I chose the Kissing Booth print by Hello Luscious on the far right in the image above. I cut areas that were heavily yellow.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Other fabrics that I thought would make great choices are, on the far left, Anna Maria Horner's butterfly print (which I did use for the center of the coneflower in my block) and, in the center, Bijoux by Bari J for Art Gallery Fabrics. I really wanted to use the Bijioux print because the scale and pattern is so perfect but it really leans toward the lavender and I don't have any lavender in my quilt. Maybe you can try it for me!</div>

The Boston Modern Quilt Guild has been accepting blocks for the <a href="http://bostonmqg.blogspot.com/p/quilts-for-boston.html">Quilts for Boston</a> effort and provided my guild with 6 assembled quilt tops, batting, backing fabrics and binding rolls. <br />
The <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/patchworkplease/">Zakka Along 2.0</a> is several weeks into the sew along and I am finally fitting in one of the projects! I happen to need a little gift for a baby girl soon and thought that the Yum Yum Apple Bib in <a href="http://ayumills.blogspot.com/">Ayumi's</a> book, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Patchwork-Please-Colorful-Projects-Stitch/dp/1596685999/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1373331872&sr=8-1&keywords=patchwork+please">Patchwork Please</a> would be perfect.<br />
<br />
This is actually my second attempt. In my first attempt, I chose a print featuring apples that was too busy for the center band and the appliqued seeds didn't show up. Make sure you choose fabrics that are very similar in color and value when you choose your prints so you don't end up with a redo!<br />
<br />
The pattern calls for 1" bias tape but doesn't say how it should be folded. I found that bit a little unclear. On my first bib, I used some 1/2" double fold bias which worked out ok but it seemed really stiff and heavy. I decided to add some batting which the pattern does not call for. Therefore, I had a little extra bulk, but I found that cutting a 1 1/4" strip of fabric along the bias and then ironing under 1/4" on each long end and then folding it in half and pressing worked well for me. <br />
<br />
I hope you are having fun with this sew along. I will be back Sept. 9th with my stop on the sew along, the Vintage Pencil Case!<br />

<br />
I teased a bit about this project a couple of weeks ago but I wanted to let you know that my machine pieced clamshell tutorial is now up on the Sizzix blog. You can find it right <a href="http://blog.sizzix.com/machine-pieced-clamshell-pillow/">here</a>.
<br />
<br />
This project was the perfect way to highlight the Briar Rose charm pack sent to me by <a href="http://www.windhamfabrics.com/cgi-bin/fabricshop/gallery.cgi?Category=649">Windham Fabrics</a>. I often have a hard time figuring out how to use precuts but <a href="http://www.sizzix.com/product/658660/sizzix-bigz-die-clamshell-4-1-2-unfinished">clamshell die</a> and charm packs were made for each other. It was a great fit!
<br />
<br />
This tutorial will show you how I assembled the pillow top step by step. I hope it makes the idea of machine piecing clamshells seem less daunting. It is certainly slow going but very doable.
<br />
<br />
I did not quilt the Briar Rose clamshells, instead I just quilted the "background" clamshells. I quilted with a clamshell sort of freemotion quilting design that seemed appropriate. I backed the pillow top with <a b="477359&u=815916&m=46996&urllink=&afftrack=" href="http://www.blogger.com/%3Ca%20href=" r.cfm="" www.shareasale.com="">Therm O Web</a> fusible fleece which was great because it kept all my seams in place while I quilted, skipping the basting step. I finished my pillow in my traditional way, with an invisible zipper from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/zipit">Zipit</a>. <br />
<br />
I hope you will give it a try!Amy Friendhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06910707686408995865noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3359853402872399310.post-3877385656593692252013-07-03T21:48:00.000-04:002013-07-05T19:04:28.257-04:00Cover Girl!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I have to say that it was thrilling to get an email from Michele Duffy, editor-in-chief of American Quilter saying "You're a cover girl!" Wow! I designed and sewed and photographed the quilt shown here on the cover of the September 2013 issue. The magazine will be shipping July 16th and can be found on newsstands on August 6th.</div>

I really pushed myself on the quilting of this quilt. I free motion quilted my heart out and used more thread than I care to recall. I just know that I even had my mother driving around to quilting shops picking up more spools for me at the last minute. I'm pretty proud of my efforts because the quilt has some amazing texture. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm sure I am going to post again when I have the actual magazine in hand, so bear with me. I'm just excited! I hope you love this quilt and maybe are inspired to make it! Becca at <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/sewmeasong">Sew Me A Song</a> has stocked all the solids that I used in the quilt and will be adding a quilt kit option so you can do some one stop shopping. You can also find all the fabric used in this quilt at the <a href="http://www.fatquartershop.com/">Fat Quarter Shop</a>, which is where I purchased mine this past winter.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
This is the 14th pattern I have completed for my garden quilt which means that I only have 2 more to design now before meeting my goal of 16 blocks. I can hardly wait to assemble my quilt!</div>

<br />
I knew I had to incorporate my single remaining charm square with the little yellow bee from <a href="http://www.windhamfabrics.com/cgi-bin/fabricshop/gallery.cgi?Category=649">Briar Rose</a>. I love it there!<br />

I was a little stumped when Therm O Web asked me for a Patriotic craft. I had never made anything with a Patriotic theme before. After a little thinking, I decided to make a zip bag with red and white stripes and I chose to pleat them so that they have a texture that reminds me a bit of bunting. The diecut flower sort of stands in for the stars on the flag. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was a fun project and you can find the complete tutorial on the <a href="http://thermoweb.com/blog/patriotic-bunting-bag-by-amy-friend/">Therm O Web blog</a> today. </div>

I'm so happy with this pattern! I've been mulling over a topiary block design for the better part of a year now but it was a tricky one to execute. All the blocks in my gardening series are 10" square and topiaries tend to be rectangular. It seemed that the best solution was to make two but I didn't want to simply join two halves with a line down the center. I wanted to be able to break the block up in a less obvious way. Finally everything just clicked and I love it!</div>

I finally found a moment to return to my garden quilt, a long term paper piecing project of mine. I decided that every garden needed a birdhouse. I know that I have several in my yard, mostly handmade and I love them! I especially love the little house that hangs in a lilac bush right outside my sewing room window. I often hear those birds singing while I sew. <br />

Fabrics used: sky is a DS Quilts print, trunk and birdhouse opening are BasicGrey Sweet Serenade (not yet released), birdhouse is made of <a href="http://www.fatquartershop.com/store/stores_app/Browse_Item_Details.asp?sid=94976222127599497&Store_id=499&page_id=23&Item_ID=90464&Parent_Ids=">Wickerweave yellow texture by Andover Fabrics</a>, <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/112606577/sundrop-shaded-cotton-by-riley-blake?ref=shop_home_active&ga_search_query=shaded">Sundrop Shaded Cotton by Riley Blake</a> and Joel Dewberry Vintage Yellow wood grain. <br />

This block brings me to 12 completed original designs. My goal remains 16 blocks which means that I have 4 more to go. I have a few ideas percolating and I hope to get to them soon. I'd love to finish this quilt over the summer. I'm pleased with the way I have been able to keep all of the blocks cohesive with my fabric choices while working from my stash as I go. I didn't plan my colors from the beginning but rather let the first few blocks lead me. Now I test new fabrics against the blocks that I have already made before I make a new block.</div>

Therm O Web is kicking off the summer season with free shipping on every order of $45 or more. You must use the code FSS13. (I love that the seahorse skirt I made is part of the ad!)<br />
<br />
If you haven't used their products before, I can assure you that you will love HeatnBond and their extra loft fusible fleece. Both are favorites of mine.<br />

I've been busily working with a charm pack of Briar Rose by Heather Ross for Windham Fabrics and a newly introduced Sizzix die, the <a href="http://www.sizzix.com/product/658660/sizzix-bigz-die-clamshell-4-1-2-unfinished">4" clamshell</a>.
<br />
<br />
I got it into my head that I was going to machine piece the clamshells rather than applique and while it was slow going and careful work, I am pleased with the results! I am turning this panel into a finished project and will be sharing it next month along with the full tutorial for sewing the clamshells together with step by step photos.

I was so happy when Tacha Bruecher asked me to contribute to this book, <u>Playful, Little Paper Pieced Projects</u>.<br />
<br />
So many of my paper piecing friends have projects in this book! They include <a href="http://ayumills.blogspot.com/">Ayumi (Pink Penguin)</a>, <a href="http://verykerryberry.blogspot.com/">Kerry (Verykerryberry)</a>, <a href="http://wheretheorchidsgrow.blogspot.com/">Leila (Where the Orchids Grow)</a>, <a href="http://sewtakeahike.typepad.com/">Penny (Sewtakeahike)</a>,<a href="http://www.jednoiglec.blogspot.com/">Julianna (Sewing Under the Rainbow), <a href="http://charisecreates.blogspot.com/">Charise (Charise Creates)</a>), <a href="http://lilysquilts.blogspot.com/">Lynne (Lily's Quilts)</a>, <a href="http://cuttopieces.blogspot.com/">Angela (Cut to Pieces)</a>, <a href="http://shape-moth.blogspot.com/">Joanna (ShapeMoth)</a> and more.</a><br />
<br />
You can read more about the book on the <a href="http://www.ctpub.com/productdetails.cfm?PC=3050">C&T Publishing</a> website where the book is available for pre order. You can also find it on <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Playful-Little-Paper-Pieced-Projects-Quilters/dp/1607058200/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1371504680&sr=1-1&keywords=playful+little+paper+pieced">Amazon</a>. The book won't be out till December of this year so there is still quite a wait! I look forward to flipping through it though!Amy Friendhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06910707686408995865noreply@blogger.com17tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3359853402872399310.post-59191098539336164942013-06-15T19:27:00.000-04:002013-06-15T19:27:09.442-04:00Scoops of Love<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I was contacted by the Northern Lights Quilt Guild from Lebanon, NH. One of their guild members, Sue Crate, has initiated the Scoops of Love program to cheer students entering the 1st and 2nd grade this fall. I think it sounds like a fun and meaningful summer project for quilters. If you have any questions, please contact Sue at the email address above. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
School gets out next week and it's time to update Lily's wardrobe for summer! I've noticed a sea horse trend in children's clothing this year. My daughter is a big fan of sea creatures and has latched onto that trend so I decided to design this oceany summer skirt with a seahorse applique.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifXAcVNxVON0sL-szxbPCA077xbAhsi2FYGtZIiwweN9Fjk6MooZ29tKmCKhssiyfcNui19S1kGO18tpSf21lwUjgdfZUeO0BGTTHLL8jB4iFkUsUMtTxV3oTaxYsVqh56bDZk7isurgs/s1600/IMGP5713a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifXAcVNxVON0sL-szxbPCA077xbAhsi2FYGtZIiwweN9Fjk6MooZ29tKmCKhssiyfcNui19S1kGO18tpSf21lwUjgdfZUeO0BGTTHLL8jB4iFkUsUMtTxV3oTaxYsVqh56bDZk7isurgs/s640/IMGP5713a.jpg" width="422" /></a></div>
<br />
I used HeatNBond Lite for this applique which is available online right <a href="http://www.shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=477359&u=815916&m=46996&urllink=&afftrack=">here</a>. I highly recommend it because the applique isn't stiff at all which makes it perfect for clothing that you want to drape.
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My full tutorial is available on the <a href="http://thermoweb.com/blog/heatnbond-seahorse-summer-skirt-project/">Therm O Web blog</a> today. </div>

<br />
The arrangement of blocks in this finished quilt is an X so I am calling it X Marks the Spot for a lack of a better name! <br />
<br />
If you have been following along over the past couple of months, I have been sharing tutorials focusing on the Sizzix
<span style="color: #2288bb;">parallelogram</span> die.<br />

<br />
<a href="http://duringquiettime.blogspot.com/2013/05/ribbons-mini-series-1-block-5.html">Mini Series 1, Block 5 Ribbons</a><br />
<br />
When I last wrote about the quilt, I said that the blocks would be on point and in a modern layout.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjenoy6iNXVod9k_U2GrDR7gu6beXrsc5ThbIqRJETwJwp29eJBBaFLm1Gn8gPPgDIY8hyphenhyphenmxyKxmYS5oTMsLv9TN39EhBaWTDbAClkRDHz-uRl8yrVPaA-wx9iXLIRNzX-ADUbCCE3RoB8/s1600/2013-05-26+IMGP5672a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjenoy6iNXVod9k_U2GrDR7gu6beXrsc5ThbIqRJETwJwp29eJBBaFLm1Gn8gPPgDIY8hyphenhyphenmxyKxmYS5oTMsLv9TN39EhBaWTDbAClkRDHz-uRl8yrVPaA-wx9iXLIRNzX-ADUbCCE3RoB8/s400/2013-05-26+IMGP5672a.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
First I decided on the placement of the 5 blocks. I cut cornerstones using the <a href="http://www.sizzix.com/product/656674/sizzix-bigz-l-die-squares-2-finished-2-1-2-unfinished">2 1/2" square die</a> and sashing using the <a href="http://www.sizzix.com/product/658328/sizzix-bigz-xl-25-die-strips-2-1-2-wide">2 1/2" strip die</a>. I cut the squares of background fabric to equal the finished size of the pieced blocks. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0vj34UhP6yuKF7LqdB_5ZPdiOUheeuSgvSElZ1LxrSBH7lOrjP89khLiVcOSAcZsoMyxBwDY3NV3bYDASWQzzu8imw7VA2skLQ1e7TaRmuJ9yaKeacgncgINtQ590UzwJAtYwf3Yl7uk/s1600/2013-05-26+IMGP5674a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0vj34UhP6yuKF7LqdB_5ZPdiOUheeuSgvSElZ1LxrSBH7lOrjP89khLiVcOSAcZsoMyxBwDY3NV3bYDASWQzzu8imw7VA2skLQ1e7TaRmuJ9yaKeacgncgINtQ590UzwJAtYwf3Yl7uk/s320/2013-05-26+IMGP5674a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
After piecing, I turned the square on point to make an "X." (Sorry for the odd color but the sun was strong when I was working on this part!)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj39_6cja1ft003r1LZEqrDScrLgs0ZYMGqty5Z9bYUs7N59e00FKhTEQ8DKJCvELeyEYEnOeoMxUnU5hDnPjtcNC0TfUE4bb5N48T2nGzyZbQSS8AvxV4QOqxnQKmC7wXCZ-i5vNqtzKU/s1600/2013-05-27+IMGP5676a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj39_6cja1ft003r1LZEqrDScrLgs0ZYMGqty5Z9bYUs7N59e00FKhTEQ8DKJCvELeyEYEnOeoMxUnU5hDnPjtcNC0TfUE4bb5N48T2nGzyZbQSS8AvxV4QOqxnQKmC7wXCZ-i5vNqtzKU/s320/2013-05-27+IMGP5676a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I added one more border with corner stones on the tips for a bit of added color. This border finished the black sashing around each block too in order to really make the black pop. I then free pieced the backing by cutting triangles a bit longer than each side of the square and piecing them together then squaring up the quilt top.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU0gmIg-N0mrdlXbNAWLQ7CGqbh9e7PxBvav0MCFNNyUd_34fx-GwyigyApyBLoxWn2HwSscIePVl_h8dlTZSDIASXXUVhO0M8JFPoQWhxc_IreG8urR0nDHpmPZwADNgIqX6FULNofz4/s1600/IMGP5952a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU0gmIg-N0mrdlXbNAWLQ7CGqbh9e7PxBvav0MCFNNyUd_34fx-GwyigyApyBLoxWn2HwSscIePVl_h8dlTZSDIASXXUVhO0M8JFPoQWhxc_IreG8urR0nDHpmPZwADNgIqX6FULNofz4/s400/IMGP5952a.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I quilted in a grid with my lines about 2" apart.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The backing is a length of black crosshatch pieced with a band of the background material in order to make it wide enough. I used the peach colored fabric to make a scrappy binding.</div>

My finished quilt measures 45" x 51 1/2". The majority of fabrics used in the blocks for this quilt can be found at <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/sewmeasong">Sew Me A Song</a>. The backing fabric was from <a href="http://www.marmaladefabrics.com/">Marmalade Fabrics</a> and the background fabric is from Fabric.com.</div>

<br />
I had the chance to play with another newly released Sizzix quilting die, the <a href="http://www.sizzix.com/product/658671/sizzix-bigz-xl-25-die-diamonds-2-1-2-2-3-4-x-6-1-2-unfinished">Sizzix Bigz XL 25" Die - Diamonds, 2 1/2" (2 3/4" x 6 1/2" Unfinished)</a>. I've long admired Lone Star quilts so I decided to use a half yard bundle of <a href="http://www.liveartgalleryfabrics.com/luxeinbloom.html">Luxe in Bloom in the Greystone colorway</a> as well as Kona Ash to make this lone star quilt measuring about 43 1/2" x 57." I was able to piece the star as well as the back of the quilt with the Luxe in Bloom using every scrap! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZkaM3rfCpYo2qwWFfWAp13oQnj_pjvln1o59rFQM076UpdzElQr8cspfCuBSpUMDhzxUYn4wGlrthfDOstSvMXvVknC4DQUtvvsSx0WteUbOfc78lBXxgGqtaeQk3MlxVBDnJfOWDdVU/s1600/IMGP5490a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="263" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZkaM3rfCpYo2qwWFfWAp13oQnj_pjvln1o59rFQM076UpdzElQr8cspfCuBSpUMDhzxUYn4wGlrthfDOstSvMXvVknC4DQUtvvsSx0WteUbOfc78lBXxgGqtaeQk3MlxVBDnJfOWDdVU/s400/IMGP5490a.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
To create a more modern variation of the lone star, I cut the right side of my star off so that the center of my star is not in the center of the quilt.<br />

I just received a new bundle of Sizzix quilting dies in the mail and can't wait to put them to use. It's just so hard to find so much as a free minute at the end of the school year! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I may have mentioned once or twice how much I love textured solids, no? I just think that they add so much depth and interest to a project. Today, I am hosting a giveaway for this Fat Quarter stack of Andover's new Textured Solids thanks to <a href="http://www.sewfreshfabrics.com/">Sew Fresh Fabrics</a>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I thought I would talk a little bit about textured solids as a fabric category first because there are a different kinds and it can get a little confusing. Regular, flat solids include Kona, Free Spirit Designer Solids and Art Gallery Fabrics Pure Elements Solids. They are consistent in their coloration and have a smooth texture as you would expect from quilting cottons. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSvoJTSrXg_SQrOk6htjiuPKPely-AuneV15CyF8qcoBE5YprAowoNc69ZM_CUJkNXybJLcp0X7E5PJUK7_y8wqN76fXHZ-fcmsRWZsKev-Io5Wrwko69M_nbJD0UP4YCV5Zo6Y5NP1Y8/s1600/IMGP5655a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="263" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSvoJTSrXg_SQrOk6htjiuPKPely-AuneV15CyF8qcoBE5YprAowoNc69ZM_CUJkNXybJLcp0X7E5PJUK7_y8wqN76fXHZ-fcmsRWZsKev-Io5Wrwko69M_nbJD0UP4YCV5Zo6Y5NP1Y8/s400/IMGP5655a.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then there are textured solids like those pictured above. These fabrics are all smooth to the touch with no slub or variation in the weave. But they have a textured <em>printed</em> design. From left to right I am showing a BasicGrey Grunge, a Riley Blake Shaded Cotton, Andover's Wickerweave, Mod-Century, and Quilter's Linen. The texture in this case is visual but not tactile.</div>

Oakshott shot cotton is in a category of it's own. It is smooth, if anything, it has a sheen and is silky to the touch. But it isn't flat visually because the warp and weft are woven from different colors. It has a lot of depth.<br />

Linen and Essex Linen have a very tactile texture. There is some variation in the surface texture. You can clearly see the weave of the fabric. The two fabrics pictured on the left are Robert Kaufman Yarn Dyed Essex, with regular Essex Linen on the right.</div>

Andover's Textured Solids are 100% cotton and like linen, have a very noticeable weave with slub. Unlike linen, they are a thinner, lighter weight. While I love linen, it can be tricky to piece due to the added bulk. These textured solids might be a great solution for a good piecing material that gives a linen like look.<br />

I finally entered the 21st century and got a tablet. I've been so busy with flags that I have been using the tablet with it's protective film still on it since I hadn't had time to make a cover. I fixed that Friday night! I used some of my hoarded Melody Miller typewriter fabric along with Type by Julia Rothman for Windham Fabrics and Robert Kaufman Essex Yarn Dyed in Flax. I used some <a href="http://www.thermowebonline.com/p/heatnbond-fleece-fusible-high-loft-white-22-in-x-1-yard-pack/interfacing-stabilizers_fleece?pp=24">HeatnBond Fleece Fusible Highloft</a> to give the tablet a bit of cushion.<br />
<br />
I liked the rectangular flap closure that <a href="http://oneshabbychick.typepad.com/">Amber</a> uses on her ipad covers so I did something similar. <br />
